It may not sound very interesting (I can’t even pronounce it, for starters!) but when you see this bridge, you can immediately understand why it’s so special.
On the sides of the bridge are thousands, and I do mean thousands, of engraved padlocks with names of couples, dates of weddings and heart signs galore- from when people have (quite literally) gotten hitched. It’s apparently a great tradition in Cologne to mark a marriage or just the love of a couple by having a lock engraved with the lovers' names. A literal bond of their union, so to speak.
It’s fascinating and beautiful at the same time that this bridge has become so special to so many people. There are just so many locks- so many people who have fallen in love here in Cologne, that it is simply mesmerising just to walk the length of the bridge and read the engravings. Some locks are fancier than others, some are larger, some are cast iron and some are cheap metal. Occasionally, you see five locks hanging off one another, which I assume is where someone has had multiple marriages or an orgy or something… But either way, it's touching to think that all of these represent something meaninful to someone.
Comment what you think of this strange exotic custom- I think it's rather sweet but maybe you disagree with me!Also, sorry this is my first blog in a while, I've been busy with revision and every time I have tried to blog, my internet has died on me and I've lost all of it. Believe it or not, this is my FOURTH time writing up this blog post, so I'm glad you can finally read it!
