Now, ageism is something that teenagers experience on a daily basis. Shady looks when we cross the street, stereotyping teens as aggressive and violent, the fact that the words 'youths' and 'thugs' come together.Yes, as a fifteen year old girl, I have experienced all these things. And frankly, I am getting VERY sick of it.
It's hard enough to be a young person as it is without the BBC cranking up the pressure on us. The expectation of teenagers to be binge-drinking, uneducated, lazy idiots is at an all-time high. So why is the BBC producing shows which feed off this expectation?
Answer: Teenagers are easy pickings. The BBC has worked out that although ageism is wrong, it's not going to get many complaints because we are taught to expect that young people will be this way and that the BBC is only highlighting this fact. Maybe next year, instead of 'Young, Dumb and Living Off Mum' it'll be 'Black, Dumb and Living Off Mum'. I'm sure the complaints will come rolling in then!
So, when will the BBC begin to show respect and equality to teenagers? Quite frankly, they won't. Not unless we make them.
My first step was to complain to the beeb about the show. If you want to join me to fight this cause, you can either write your own letter of complaint and send it at: https://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/forms/
Alternatively, you can use my letter of complaint- which I will put in my next blog ASAP and send it at the same address. Remember to ask for a response!
