It’s an American documentary series about the glitzy and somewhat horrific world of children’s beauty pageants.
The first time I watched it was at a friend’s house- the kick it gave us to laugh at the dolled-up little girls dancing and singing away, and their mad, overly-competitive (and usually obese) mothers who are willing to do anything to win! In one episode a mother wanted to shave her child’s back hair because she thought a tufty back would lose the child points! Hilarious!
But after that first hit, I needed more.
Inevitably, it quickly went from being “just a joke” to something rather more serious. I now watch the show online almost every day- without laughing. I watch it because I genuinely enjoy the show, even though I know it’s awful.
After a while, you sort of get to understanding the parents with their strange ideals. In their own eyes, they’re doing the best they can for their children- putting them out there and spending money necessary to give them all the opportunities they can.
I don’t condone it, but I at least understand it.
And I’ll probably continue to watch the show, because I’m completely hooked. After all, what’s life without a little glitz and glamour, even it is only from watching a show about bratty little kids in expensive dresses?
