For starters, your workload and responsibility both double in size, which is scary. But you get to drop your least favourite subjects, which makes it all better!
But the best thing? Free periods, affectionately known as 'frees'.
Just a few lessons off a week, and I'm a happy bunny.
Of course, we're supposed to be working in those few hours. Preparing revision, rewriting our notes, drafting essays- that kind of thing.
And, of course... nobody does.
Nope, we've been being far more original than that! So here, in order, are the things that us sixthformers do in our free periods!
1. Attack the vending machine
If there's one thing that teenagers love, it's junk food. And thankfully, we have a vending machine in our common room, so I almost never miss my daily Twix if I have a free period that day!
Thanks to all my free periods, I'm learning a lot more card games. Today, for example, I learnt how to play Spit- a really fun, fast-paced game that's great if you're a bit tired of revision, and need 5 minutes of mindless gambling with friends.
3. Paint our nails
Amongst the girls (and a few of the more flamboyant boys), it has become a bit of a thing to paint nails in frees. And the prettier, sparklier and more colourful, the better!
4. Have silent discos
Sometimes in free periods, everyone gets out their iPods and we just have little silent discos, miming the words together to all our cheesiest songs!
5. Get to know each other
And when we're not doing all of the above, we just talk. It's always nice to take five minutes to get to know someone, and I'm still new to the school, so I'm trying to talk to all the people I haven't really spoken to yet. And frees are always a nice place to do that.
Of course, I'm exaggerating. We do occasionally get some work done!
If you're still in school, comment what you do during your free periods- it'll give my friends and I more ideas on how best to procrastinate during our frees! And if you're not in school, comment anyway, saying how much you enjoyed this blog post!
