Yep, I know what your thinking!
Yolanda, Why did you start this blog with a definition? That’s not like you!
Well, not to insult my readers (who I love, and I’m sure you all know what awkward means anyway) but a LOT of the internet seems to be oblivious to its meaning, using it in all the wrong ways.
Most recently, this can be seen in social media- where ‘The Awkward Moment When...’ is a very popular phrase peppered generously around tumblr, facebook and twitter- to the point where it is annoying and excessive.
For example: ‘The awkward moment when you go onto the internet at 6pm and then 2 minutes later it's midnight’.
In what way is that awkward?!?
If you spend longer than you intend to on the computer, do you shuffle around silently, pretending that you don’t exist? Because that, my friend, is awkwardness.
True awkwardness is found in situations where you embarrass yourself in front of a whole group of people- not when you overdose on internet memes and end up spending 6 hours on DamnLol without planning to! That’s just poor time management!
So let’s PLEASE make a change. Let’s start the Awkward Game. Any time someone says awkward when it’s blatantly not, point at them and scream, let’s make it clear- I mean belt it out- YOU LOST THE AWKWARD GAME!!! Let’s get this game viral and shame people into not ever using the dreaded phrase again.
Actually, scrap that, it might be a bit of an awkward moment...
