A. Well, there’s a lot of... chaff groups. Flimsy feminists, I like to call them.
Take groups such as Russian feminist group “Pussy Riot”- they just seem to like protesting, claiming they are feminists, and alluding vaguely to a “feminist revolution”. It’s like something out of Monty Python!
Similarly, “The Muff March”, in London last year- a protest against the surgeons of Harley Street who are taking advantage of women, by charging large sums for vaginal surgery. Clearly, this isan issue- but the way that “The Muff March” tried to deal with it really didn’t work.
Instead of taking it seriously, UK Feminista turned the whole issue into one big joke- protesting with ridiculous pubic hair wigs, and doing a mass “Muff Dance” in the street.
And body image is just one issue. In case people had forgotten, the pay gap still exists- as does domestic abuse, sexual harassment, sexism in the workplace and in the media.
Perhaps what feminist groups really need to do is stop drumming up publicity with stunts like “The Muff Dance” and work against sexism through other methods- i.e. working with the media to reduce sexism in the newspapers and TV. So, to answer the original question, feminism is still very relevant in today’s world. But it certainly has a long way to go.
Comment below what you think of this issue- even the men reading this! Don't feel left out just because this is feminism!
